The 2016 Sanam Teri Kasam, a romantic film, has made history by becoming the first film to cross the ₹50 crore mark at the box office after re-release. The film, at first, did not get the reaction it actually deserved from the people. But at its second release, it finally gained the success it had been anticipating for so long.

Starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, the movie now beats the previous record of Tumbbad to become the re-released movie with the biggest collection. Starring Sohum Shah, the movie Tumbbad had crossed over ₹32 crore net from India. At the same time, Sanam Teri Kasam is also trending in theatres and now is closing in on the mark of ₹53 crore. As per industry monitor Sacnilk, Sanam Teri Kasam has made a box office storm in its re-release, collecting more than ₹32 crore net in just 16 days, including its third-week collections.

The film’s sustained success has taken its overall earnings, including both its original and re-release collections, past the ₹50 crore mark globally. When Sanam Teri Kasam originally released in theaters in 2016, it wasn’t exactly a huge hit, but it was successful in its own capacity. When initially released, the film made ₹9.11 crore in India and ₹16.03 crore globally, and that was an impressive feat for a movie made on a shoestring budget of ₹5 crore. Even though it did not join the ₹50 crore or ₹100 crore club at that time, its tear-jerking story and soulful music slowly and steadily won a special place in people’s hearts.

When the re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam was announced, nobody thought that it would create box office fireworks. But then, history was rewritten before our eyes. The movie is a passionate love affair between Inder, an ex-convict, and Saru, a conservative librarian. But their romance goes awry in the tragic end. With Chirantan Das’s beautiful photography and a haunting soundtrack scored by Himesh Reshammiya, the movie earned a special position in the hearts of many even though it suffered initially at the box office.

Released by Eros International on February 5, 2016, Sanam Teri Kasam had mixed reviews and was not doing well at the box office then. But due to a nine-year long hiatus, the re-release of the film on February 7, 2025, changed its fortune. It became a shocking blockbuster, demonstrating that some movies just need a second opportunity to rule!
