WhatsApp has become the largest messaging platform in the country. But recently WhatsApp has closed about 84 lakh accounts in India. This step has been taken by Meta, which is the parent company of WhatsApp. Its main objective is to prevent increasing fraud and abuse on the platform.
The company says that this decision has been taken to protect users from online fraud and provide a safe environment. According to Meta's transparency report, 8.45 million (more than 84 lakh) accounts were banned between August 1 and August 31. This action has been taken under Section 4(1)(d) and Section 3A(7) of the Information Technology Act.
1.66 million accounts were blocked immediately due to serious violations. Other accounts were reviewed and banned after being found to be involved in suspicious activities.
More than 1.6 million accounts were banned proactively by WhatsApp itself during monitoring, which did not require a user complaint.
Now let us tell you about the reason behind this. WhatsApp has some terms and conditions, if not followed, WhatsApp has the right to close the account.
This includes sending bulk messages without permission, spamming and fraudulent activities, and spreading false or misleading information.
Apart from this, accounts that were violating local laws were banned. 10,707 users filed complaints against the accounts. Immediate action was taken in 93% of these cases. Special attention was given to complaints related to harassment, fraud, or inappropriate behavior.
This step of WhatsApp has been taken to make the platform safe and reliable. Meta's banning of millions of accounts shows that the company is continuously taking strict measures to prevent fraud and abuse.
