Bollywood’s scandal queen actress Kangana Ranaut has come to the defense of joint families after viewing the ageless tale of Sanya Malhotra’s film Mrs.

Sanya Malhotra’s Mrs. is gaining huge admiration on social media for showcasing the plight of patriarchy and arranged marriages in Indian joint families. Meanwhile, some critics are also targeting the joint family system.

Story of Mrs.:

The movie has triggered effective conversations, especially among women, as it depicts their silent battles in a conservative family environment.

The protagonist, Richa (Sanya), is saddled with all the household work, from cleaning to washing dishes, cooking, and even repairing leaky taps. The men of the house are busy with their mobile phones or yoga, while she is busy with all the chores. The patriarchal atmosphere is so strong that the daughter-in-law is even asked to present a toothbrush to her father-in-law while he relaxes in the veranda.

At the end of the movie, even though most married women felt heard and understood, the narrative also imparted a valuable lesson—encouraging women to voice themselves for their rights.

Kangana Ranaut’s Stand in Favor of Joint Families:

Amidst patriarchal criticism and the difficulties women encounter in arranged marriages, Kangana Ranaut stressed that Indian joint families need to be promoted and that the elders should not be given a negative image.

Referring indirectly to Mrs., Kangana lastly spoke her mind in an Instagram story. She said:

“I never observed a woman growing up who didn’t have complete command over her household. Women would decide when to have meals, sleep, and go out. They even had power over the finances of the household, which their husbands had to go along with. The only actual disagreements at home were about men socializing with friends or drinking too much.”

Kangana went on:

“Marriages are not for seeking approval; they are for taking care of those who are weak—particularly the elderly and infants, because they are helpless. Earlier generations did their duty towards their parents and elders without questioning them; they just did their duty.”

Discussing a bitter reality of society, she added:

“Most of the Bollywood love stories have spoiled the idea of marriage. The intention of marriage has always been Dharma—duty in India. Simply do your things; life is short and speedy. If you go on expecting too much approval and attention, you will end up with your therapist alone.”

Continuing her thoughts, the Emergency actress added:

“As a country, we must not encourage divorce, nor must we make the younger generation leave their old parents or live without kids. No other human being, success, wealth, marriage, singlehood, or worldly pleasure can give us real peace. These things were never designed for personal enjoyment.”

Wrapping up her message, Kangana cautioned the younger generation:

“If you want happiness, get it from where it is to be found. Otherwise, just do your duty without hoping for happiness from it. Joint families are our greatest strength. Let us not encourage divorce, and let us not persuade the younger generation to leave their old parents or live a childless life.”
