Weak eyesight is the new pandemic amongst kids and the younger generation. While most of it is said to be genetic, excessive scree is a major factor in increasing the myopia risk . A new study reveals that spending just one hour daily on digital screens like tablets or smartphones can increase the risk of myopia (nearsightedness) by 21 percent, with risks escalating up to 4 hours of use. The research, published in JAMA Network Open, analyzed data from 45 investigations involving over 335,000 participants ranging from toddlers to young adults.

The study found a sigmoidal dose-response pattern, suggesting a potential safety threshold of less than 1 hour per day of screen exposure. The risk of myopia increased significantly between 1-4 hours of screen time before rising more gradually. "These findings can offer guidance to clinicians and researchers regarding myopia risk," researchers stated.

The comprehensive analysis comes amid a surge in nearsightedness cases primarily attributed to increased digital screen usage. No association was found with exposure under 1 hour, indicating a possible safety threshold that could help clinicians address what researchers term the "myopia pandemic."

Industry experts in India recently discussed technology and gadget usage challenges faced by students, parents, and teachers, particularly during examination periods.

Extended screen time can impact brain cognitive functions due to decreased attention span. The prolonged use often involves sitting in uncomfortable postures on beds or couches. The extended screen exposure can lead to various health issues including obesity, body aches, spine problems, and backaches.

The research provides valuable insights for healthcare providers and researchers working to address the growing concern of myopia in the digital age. The findings particularly emphasize the importance of monitoring and limiting screen time, especially among young people.

Steps to prevent eye strain from screens

Here are 5 strategies to avoid myopia brought on by too much screen time:

Use the 20-20-20 Rule : To lessen eye strain, take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and gaze at anything 20 feet away.

Increase Outdoor Time: You can lessen eye tiredness and prevent the growth of myopia by spending at least two hours each day outside.

Modify Screen Settings: To reduce strain, use blue light filters, enlarge the font, and keep the screen at the optimum brightness level.

Maintain a Safe Viewing Distance: Steer clear of using devices in low light and keep screens at least an arm's length away.

Make routine eye exams a priority. They can help identify early myopia symptoms and stop vision deterioration.

The systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis establish clear connections between digital device usage and vision problems, offering concrete data to support screen time recommendations for various age groups.
