When it comes to grand palaces, India boasts some of the most opulent and historically rich structures in the world. Among them, Laxmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara , Gujarat, stands out as one of the most magnificent royal residences ever built. What makes it even more fascinating? It is nearly four times the size of Buckingham Palace in the United Kingdom!

Built in 1890 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Laxmi Vilas Palace remains the official residence of the Gaekwad royal family of Vadodara. This architectural masterpiece spans over 500 acres, making it one of the largest private residences in the world. To put that into perspective, the grand Buckingham Palace in London covers about 19 acres, whereas Laxmi Vilas Palace is spread across over 700 acres, including its gardens, golf course, and heritage buildings.

The palace is a stunning example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, a style that blends Indian, Islamic, and European influences. British architect Major Charles Mant designed the palace, ensuring it stood as a symbol of extravagance and innovation for its time. The palace boasts Venetian mosaic floors, Belgian stained glass windows, and intricately carved Darbar halls, which still host royal functions and cultural events.
