Captain America: Brave New World, which features Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, is struggling at the box office. Although the movie is getting close to an important worldwide benchmark, its dramatic fall in major markets, such as the U.S., is impacting its performance overall.

Box Office Performance and Decline
As per Luiz Fernando’s report, Captain America 4 collected only $28.3 million during its second three-day weekend, a significant -68.1% decline from its first holiday weekend opening. This is the third largest second-weekend decline in MCU history. The domestic total of the film is now at $141.3 million.

In contrast to other President’s Day openings, Brave New World lags behind Ant-Man 3 ($32 million), Deadpool ($56.5 million), and Black Panther ($111.7 million) in their second weekends but has been able to surpass Sonic the Hedgehog ($26.2 million) and Fifty Shades of Grey ($22.3 million). Within the Captain America series, it places third on box office collections, just above The First Avenger.

Estimated Domestic and International Performance
The movie is now looking at a domestic finish of $195 million to $215 million. Whether it can do better than Ant-Man 3 will depend on how well it can hold momentum. On the positive side, Brave New World held onto #1 at the domestic box office for the weekend.

Globally, the movie raked in $35.3 million during its second weekend, which totals $148.2 million in overseas markets in 53 territories. When added to its domestic box office, the film has now hit a worldwide cume of $289.5 million, just shy of the $300 million level.

Plot and Future MCU Ramifications
In spite of its box office failures, the movie brings Adamantium into the MCU and deals with the Celestial in the sea, paving the way for future X-Men storylines. Its emphasis on global politics and resource wars may also influence future MCU storytelling, such as international cooperation and superhero competition.

With a production budget reportedly of $180 million, Captain America: Brave New World has already made more than 60% more than it cost. Yet its negative word-of-mouth and sharp decline in earnings leave one wondering if it will ultimately be a long-term box office success. The movie, which opened in theaters on February 14, still struggles to find a better hold in the weeks ahead.
