The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a significant rise in Pune’s daytime temperatures. The mercury is likely to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius until February 28. The IMD predicts that in the coming week, the temperature is likely to reach 36 degrees Celsius, with warmer conditions setting in from February 25.
Meanwhile, experts have advised residents to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, seek shade, and ensure proper ventilation indoors to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The weather department stated that “An anti-cyclonic circulation is currently influencing parts of the state, including Madhya Maharashtra, which encompasses Pune. This system is preventing cold northern winds from entering the region, leading to a steady rise in temperatures.”
“The Maharashtra state is undergoing a seasonal shift, and over the past three weeks, daytime temperatures have increased by 3-4°C due to this transition,” said an official.
According to the forecast, the city may also experience cloudy skies in the evening hours starting February 25. Rising temperatures may impact water resources, and a shortage of groundwater can be expected in some of the areas.
On Sunday, Solapur recorded the highest temperature in the state at 37.9°C, which was 3°C above normal. In the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, temperatures fluctuated between 32°C and 37°C, as per IMD data.
With the rising heat, experts warn that water resources could come under strain, particularly in areas where the groundwater levels are already low.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) data revealed that for the last 4-5 days, Pune city has been experiencing an increasing trend in both minimum and maximum temperatures. While the minimum temperature crossed 20°C in several parts of the city and district, maximum temperatures were reported as high as 35°C in a few tehsils and areas.
Apart from Shivajinagar, other areas, including Lonavala in Pune district, also recorded higher temperatures.
