Bollywood has recently witnessed the rise of a new trend. Lead actors are now stepping into the role of producers for their own films. While some movies performed incredible at the box office others have failed miserably. Instead of charging acting fees stars have now opted to take share in the films business and profits.
Aamir Khan once stated that for the past two decades he has stopped taking a fixed fee as an actor. Instead he only earns if a film performs well at the box office. In a chat with ABP News the PK actor shared Pichle 20-21 saal se main fee nahi leta film karne ki. Toh agar aapko film pasand aati hai toh main kamata hoon aur agar nahi toh main bhi nahi kamata (From the past 20–21 years I have stopped taking fees for doing a film as an actor. So if the film is liked by the audience only then I make money. If not even I don’t earn.)
Besides an actor he is a producer too so he understands the economics of films better. Aamir Khan thinks that if production of a film is mounted at Rs 200 crore and the star charges a hefty amount its quite difficult to recover its cost if the film flops.
When Rajesh Khanna didnt charge a penny for his film but earned 10 times more...
Did you know that this business approach was first invented by Rajesh Khanna? Even before superstars like Shah Rukh Khan Salman Khan Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar who became producers Rajesh Khanna thought of this idea first for his film Anand (1971). Instead of charging for his acting he secured the distribution rights for Anand under his company Shaktiraj Films. And it turned out to be his genius decision as he ended up earning ten times more than his usual acting fees all thanks to Anands incredible success.
Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee Anand continues to be a cult classic in Indian cinema renowned for its poignant storytelling and powerful performances by Rajesh Khanna Amitabh Bachchan and Sumita Sanyal.
