The issue of the Rs 2,500 monthly scheme for women has become a major point of contention ahead of the new Delhi assembly session on Monday, 24 February.
Former Delhi CM and current leader of opposition Atishi has accused Delhi's newly-elected BJP government of failing to fulfil its electoral promise of providing Rs 2,500 per month to every woman in Delhi, a decision which was supposed to be ratified at the new government's very first cabinet meeting.
She pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president J.P. Nadda had assured voters that the scheme would be approved in the first cabinet meeting, with the first instalment to be disbursed by 8 March.
However, the first cabinet meeting on 20 February did not include any announcement on the scheme.
She compared the situation to former chief minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s tenure, during which free electricity, water, and healthcare were provided despite budget constraints. She also questioned the BJP’s claim of an empty treasury, calling it a "lack of intent".
The AAP-led opposition is expected to raise this issue strongly in the assembly session, demanding an explanation from the BJP government.
AAP MLA Gopal Rai praised Atishi's leadership during challenging times, highlighting her tenure as both chief minister and cabinet minister. Rai also stated that AAP will act as a responsible and strong opposition if the BJP fails to fulfil its promises.
