New Delhi: Pakistan’s inconsistent performance in the tournament left them in a familiar situation—relying on other teams to keep their qualification hopes alive. However New Zealand’s emphatic victory over Bangladesh has officially ended Pakistan’s chances of progressing further. With both teams now out of contention Pakistan’s upcoming match against Bangladesh on February 27 will be nothing more than a dead rubber. Bangladesh had set their sights on a competitive total of around 300 but their innings never gained momentum mirroring Pakistan’s struggles in the previous match. While Rahim and Mahmudullah showed some intent their poor execution led to their dismissals. Najmul Hossain Shanto fought a lone battle with Jaker Ali offering brief resistance but their efforts failed to establish a solid foundation for the team. New Zealand’s bowling attack spearheaded by Michael Bracewell ensured that Bangladesh remained on the back foot. Bracewell delivered a match-winning spell dismantling the batting lineup and leaving Bangladesh constantly rebuilding. Just when they tried to regain control New Zealand’s disciplined bowling disrupted their plans once again. Even Shanto despite his resilience couldn’t prevent the inevitable collapse. Chasing 237 New Zealand displayed composure and authority. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra laid a solid foundation rotating the strike efficiently and punishing loose deliveries. Though Taskin Ahmed dismissed Will Young early the Kiwis remained in control. Kane Williamsons departure to Nahid Rana did little to disrupt their momentum. Rachin Ravindra anchored the chase with a magnificent century while Tom Latham’s crucial half-century ensured New Zealand cruised to a comfortable victory over Bangladesh. New Zealand eventually chased down the target with ease securing a comprehensive victory that sealed their place in the semifinals. More significantly the win confirmed the eliminations of both Bangladesh and Pakistan from the tournament. With this result New Zealand has established itself as a strong title contender while Pakistan and Bangladesh will have to reflect on their disappointing campaigns. For Pakistan another failed ICC event will once again raise questions about their ability to deliver on the big stage without depending on external factors.
