The Pakistan team has been hit with a lot of backlash, especially after the loss to India in the clash of Champions Trophy 2025. According to a source from the board, the support staff of the team led by Aaqib Javed is now going to be taken down from their positions. After a 60-run defeat to New Zealand on the Champions Trophy opening clash on February 19, Pakistan has also lost to historic-rivals India by six wickets in Dubai.
A source from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) gave this information that Aaqib is going to be taken down from his role as the interim head coach after the Champions Trophy.
“Obviously there is backlash over the team’s performance in the CT. The Board hasn’t decided as yet on whether the team will have separate head coaches (for red and white ball teams) but one thing is certain the current support staff will be overhauled now after the poor show in the Champions Trophy,” the source told PTI.
“But the way the Board has been changing coaches and selectors since last year, it will be a challenge to find other candidates for these positions,” he said.
PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi appointed Aaqib as the interim head coach as the team’s white-ball captian after Gary Kristen resigned from the position. Aaqib was then asked to take over as the role of interim red-ball coach for the series against South Africa and West Indies after Jason Gillespie left.
As Pakistan is going to tour New Zealand from 16th March to 5th April, the PCB is going to make final decisions on new permanent coach or maybe more than one coaches.
The source has also said that the PCB could not keep their focus on hiring new permanent coach or coaches because of the preparations for Champions Trophy, but now they are going to take hold of this issue and do their best in resolving it.
“The PCB, after the way Kirsten and Gillespie resigned, is not going to get a choice of field when it comes to foreign coaches, so most probably the PCB will look at former players for the job,” the source said.
If going with the words of the source, once the Champions Trophy campaign ends for Pakistan, Mohsin Naqvi will also have discussions with Board of Governors regarding whether to keep the national selection committee, or sack them as well.
