The captain of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) women’s team, Smriti Mandhana, publicly apologized to Ellyse Perry for not getting across the finish line in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 match after a devastating super-over defeat to UP Warriorz (UPW).

Perry, who was batting first, was the star of the first innings with a scorching 90 off only 56 balls. The only significant batting assistance came from Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who scored 57 runs before being removed in the 15th over. Perry then took control and drove the score in the last overs by himself.

However, RCB unexpectedly chose to send Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh to bat in place of Perry in the exciting Super Over that followed the match. Regretfully, this choice backfired when RCB was unable to meet their opponents’ nine-run aim.

“Having Pez back bowling is always a plus. She is one of the best in women’s cricket and an all-rounder. It was amazing to see her bat. We must really apologize to her as a team for not winning the game for her. All of the bowlers, including Sneh Rana and Ekta, bowled quite well. It does happen sometimes, and we may be rather proud of that game. During a post-match presentation, Mandhana said, “We will take that in stride and come back stronger even though things faltered towards the end.”

Sophie Ecclestone demonstrated her batting skill by hitting 33 off 19 balls to assist UP, with economical numbers of 4-0-29-0. After a spectacular comeback, Warriorz tied the match and advanced to the Super Over, where they won.

In Kim Garth’s super over, UP Warriorz only scored eight runs.

Richa Ghosh and RCB captain Smriti Mandhana then had the task of chasing down the nine-run mark against Ecclestone, but the English player prevailed with just four runs given up.
