Supreme Court news: In a major decision on the internet prices in India the Supreme Court of India has today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to regulate internet prices. However the Supreme Court granted liberty to the petitioner to seek alternative statutory remedies. The rejection of the PIL is being seen as a huge win for Mukesh Ambanis Reliance Jio Sunil Bharti Mittals Airtel as both control the majority of telecom industry in India. Here are all the details you need to know. The Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar was hearing the PIL filed by Rajat where he made the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel as the respondents in his petition. Its a free market says Supreme Court Its a free market you get LAN you get wired internet there is other internet BSNL and MTNL is also giving you internet CJI Sanjiv Khanna was quoted saying in a report by Live Law while rejecting the PIL. We are not inclined to entertain the present petition under Article 32 of the Constitution of India. We however clarify that in case the petitioner wants to take any recourse to appropriate statutory remedy is at liberty to do so we make no comments in this regard CJI Sanjiv Khanna said while rejecting the PIL. Go to the Competition Commission of India says SC No please then go to the Competition Commission of India .. the CJI said on the monopoly question of Reliance Jio and Airtel. The petitioner alleged that the majority of the market share is controlled by Jio and Reliance. The bench then said If you are alleging cartelisation then go to the Competition Commission of India. The top court however clarified that if the petitioner wanted to take any recourse to an appropriate statutory remedy he was at liberty to do so. Therefore it can be said that the telecom prices including the cost of internet prices of Reliance Jio and Airtel will remain same as of now. (With inputs from agencies)
