New Delhi: Pakistans inconsistent performances in ICC tournaments have frequently sparked discussions and sharp criticism from former cricketers. When the team underperforms blame games and heated debates become inevitable. This pattern resurfaced after their loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In a crucial must-win match against their arch-rivals Pakistan faced a six-wicket defeat at the hands of a formidable Indian team powered by a stellar century from Virat Kohli in Dubai.
A day after New Zealand defeated Bangladesh in Rawalpindi Pakistan was officially eliminated from the Champions Trophy. With India and New Zealand securing their spots in the semi-finals from Group A Pakistans final match against Bangladesh has now become a mere formality.
All hell broke loose on Pakistani television and YouTube channels where several former cricketers launched scathing attacks on the Mohammad Rizwan-led side.
Interestingly even those entrusted by the PCB to guide the team participated in TV shows openly criticizing the teams performance instead of offering support and solutions.
During a live news broadcast on PTV former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik was put on the spot by another ex-captain Mohammad Hafeez. Hafeez questioned Malik who is among the five PCB-appointed mentors for the teams improvement about whether he had any freedom in his role.
Malik is one of the five mentors working with the Pakistan team. How much responsibility and authority were you given? Hafeez asked his former teammate.
Before Malik could respond he appeared slightly uneasy. Sensing this Hafeez continued Its been six months right? Six months!
As Malik seemed to struggle with the question Shoaib Akhtar also part of the discussion intervened and urged Hafeez not to put him in a difficult position. Dont put him in a spot Akhtar said.
Hafeez however insisted that his question wasn’t difficult. Im not asking him anything tough he added.
‘Dil ke arman ansuon mein beh gaye’: Malik after Pakistan’s loss to India
Earlier following Pakistan’s defeat to India Malik summed up the emotions of Pakistan cricket fans with a Bollywood song.
After Pakistan’s poor performance against India which followed a heavy 60-run loss to New Zealand in the Champions Trophy opener former pacer Shoaib Akhtar asked Malik to express his feelings. Instead of discussing cricket Malik chose to sing the 1982 Bollywood song Dil ke arman ansuon mein beh gaye from the movie Nikaah.
