New Delhi: Despite being the host nation Pakistan was knocked out of the Champions Trophy just five days into the tournament. This disappointing exit has left not only the fans disheartened but also caused frustration and anger within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). A tough decision regarding the national team is likely though the Champions Trophy itself has temporarily given the team a lifeline. PCB has decided to remain silent on team matters until the tournament final on March 9. A close PCB source revealed that officials are deeply disappointed with the teams performance especially against their traditional rivals India. The source stated At present the board’s primary focus is to ensure the successful hosting of the Champions Trophy which is crucial for maintaining Pakistan’s reputation as a host nation. For now no comments will be made on the team’s performance. According to the PCB insider there is an internal agreement not to discuss team selection or future plans as it could distract from the tournament and generate negative headlines for Pakistan cricket. The board leadership is fully aware that no excuse or justification can be given for the teams poor performance in the tournament the source added. However the source confirmed that a comprehensive review will take place after the tournament ends to analyze what went wrong and where improvements are needed. Pakistan is set to tour New Zealand from March 15 and interim head coach Aaqib Javeds contract is set to expire on February 27 the source stated. The PCB official also mentioned that a head coach will have to be appointed for the New Zealand series but the appointment might only be temporary. It could be someone from the National High-Performance Center since PCB has not yet initiated the process of appointing a permanent head coach the source explained. PCB is expected to finalize the appointment of a new full-time head coach before the start of the next ICC World Test Championship cycle in August.
