Maha Shivratri is one of the auspicious Hindu festivals that celebrates the aura of Lord Shiva. Maha Shivratri, translated to Night of Lord Shiva, is believed to one of the most powerful nights when the devotees offer prayers with holy aura and energies all arounds. Several devotee pay their obeisance, chant the mantra all night to please the lord and muster his choicest blessings. It falls on the 14th day of Phalguna month, a day before new moon.

Some devotees often observe a nirjal (with water) fast . However, form health point of view, fasting can affect blood sugar levels, especially if you are already diabetic. Here are few Maha Shivratri fasting rules to observe if yo have diabetes.
A night before observing the fast, try to consume a well balanced meals with complex carbohydrate, whole grains, fibre etc, It will aid in regulating the blood sugar and have sustained energy.
Keep your body hydrated. Drink water, fluids on good intervals so that there is no added pressure on your kidneys.
Avoid extensive physical activity. For one day, one can avoid strenuous activities, exercise in order to conserve energy and not fall sick.
Constantly monitor your blood sugar levels.
Avoid breaking your fast with something sweet or food with high glycemic index as it can lead to sudden spike in glucose. It better to have balanced meals.
Avoid overeating immediately. Consume meals slowly for proper nutrient absorption and slow release of glucose in blood stream.
