A vet has opened up about three mistakes he made while raising his dog to help other owners learn what not to do.
Amir Anwary is a vet who regularly shares pet care advice on , as well as tricks and tips. He has gained 751,600 followers and 54.9 million likes up to now.
The vet recently posted a video discussing mistakes he made with his pet . TikTok users shared their experiences with owning pooches in the comment section.
Below are the three mistakes Amir made that he says others should "definitely not make":
1. Early castrationHe said: "Number one is I castrated my male dog way too early. He now has hip dysplasia and elbow problems. He's already developing arthritis and he's only four-year-old. I was led to believe that castrating them when they reach six months old is normal.
"He was a large breed dog and it's not normal, guys. There are different age recommendations for different dog breeds and when you should be castrating and spaying them so please don't just listen to anyone that says castrate them when they reach six-months-old. That is not science anymore."
Neutering is a common type of surgery that prevents your dog from breeding. For male dogs it is castration in which the dog's testicles are surgically removed, permanently preventing him from breeding. Spaying is used for female dogs and this is when a vet removes both the ovaries and usually the uterus so the female is unable to get pregnant.
The Kennel Club says the depends on its breed, size and sex. It adds that the 'best' age to have this done is often debated, but your vet "will be able to guide you using the latest research and guidelines."
2. Weight gainThe second mistake Amir admitted he made is he let his dog become overweight. He explained that he had "every single excuse in the book", including working too hard and deciding the weather wasn't good enough for a dog walk.
He added: "I felt bad, I fed her too much food. I gave her treats because she really liked them and she got overweight and because she's a large breed dog, I can already see it affecting her joints and it's so hard to go back when they're already developing arthritis.
"I'm doing everything I can now, of course, but I never should have let it get to that point so don't let your dogs get overweight. It's not worth it."
3. PunishmentThe final mistake Amir admitted he made was he hit her dog when she was young but it was "only when she was chasing animals on the farm" and he didn't want her to harm an animal. He said that even today he can "still see that fear in her eyes" if he lifts his hand up, even though he isn't trying to hit her.
Amir said he deeply regrets ever doing that and now realises that he should have used a different technique. He issued a plea to other dog owners: "Guys, don't hit your dogs. It just makes them scared of you."
In the caption of his TikTok post the vet wrote: "Admitting some of these is hard and embarrassing especially as a vet. But if it can help you prevent making these same mistakes then is okay."
The video, posted less than 24 hours ago, has garnered 39,000 views, 2,770 likes and more than 200 comments so far.
One user shared how she handled her pet dog urinating indoors: "I'm a mum of adopted greyhound. She peed first month indoors because of shock. I never even raised a voice, gently carried her outside each time, and she learned. Never happened again. Greys are sensitive."
Another dog owner added: "I've made some of these mistakes too. I spayed my girl at 6 months old and now she's starting to have incontinence issues at 6 1/2 years old."
And a third user thanked Amir as they said: "This is exactly what we need!! A guide for owning animals!!! Thank you."
