Flying from Delhi’s IGI Airport to Become More Expensive
Passengers traveling via Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi may soon have to pay more for their flights. The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has proposed a revision in user charges, which is expected to increase domestic airfare by 1.5-2%.
For those who frequently travel by air, this update is crucial. DIAL, the operator of Delhi Airport, has proposed separate user charges for economy and business class passengers, as well as differentiated fees for peak and non-peak hours. Once this proposal is approved, flying from Delhi IGI Airport will become more expensive compared to other airports in the country.
🔹 Per Passenger Revenue (YPP), which includes both airline and passenger fees, is expected to rise significantly.
🔹 Currently set at ₹145, the YPP is likely to increase to ₹370 after the revision.
🔹 DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar revealed that this marks a 140% increase compared to the 2006 levels, when the GMR Group-led consortium took over airport operations.
DIAL officials have clarified that 30% of the revised ₹370 YPP will be allocated to airline fees, while the remaining 70% will be covered by passenger charges. Currently, airlines bear 68% of the charges, while passengers pay 32%.
📌 Expected Impact on Ticket Prices:
✈️ Domestic airfares could rise by 1.5-2%.
✈️ International fares may see a less than 1% increase.
The proposal has been submitted to the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) and is currently under review. If approved, the new user charges will be applicable from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2029.
At present, the User Development Fee (UDF) at Delhi Airport stands at approximately ₹77 per passenger. The revision is expected to bring in additional revenue for infrastructure development while increasing costs for travelers.
