A plane flying over the UK sent a distress signal due to a "mechanical failure".

Flight PGT38X from Istanbul initiated the emergency call as it approached its destination at Manchester Airport.

Unconfirmed footage on social media appeared to show Pegasus Airlines aircraft trailing smoke from the wheels when it touched down.

Express.co.uk has contacted the airport for comment.
