February 28, Lucknow Former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is very relieved that the Uttar Pradesh government’s request to have the criminal case against him dropped was granted by the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench.
The ruling was issued on Thursday by Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan.
Singh appealed to the High Court, contesting the Gonda court’s decision to deny the state government’s request to have the prosecution against him dropped.
The state government’s request to drop the lawsuit against Singh was previously rejected by the Gonda court.
Singh was arrested in 2014 for defying a public servant’s instruction.
He was charged with convening a public assembly in violation of Section 144 of the CrPC.
Notably, the recording of one of the female wrestlers’ statements accusing Singh, the former head of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), of sexual harassment will continue before a Delhi court on March 3.
Delhi Police resisted Singh’s request at the Delhi High Court to stop the sexual harassment case’s proceedings in January.
The Delhi Police informed the court that the trial against the BJP leader is still ongoing while resisting the case’s quashing.
Singh had argued that the first information report (FIR) was “false” and “frivolous” and had sought to have it and the proceedings quashed.
Since January 2023, a number of female wrestlers, headed by Olympians Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, have staged demonstrations in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, claiming that Singh had harassed and threatened them sexually.
The wrestlers emphasized the need for a more secure and encouraging environment for athletes and called for a comprehensive reform of the WFI.
Singh stated: “When the protest started in January, I told the media that this was all a conspiracy against me, and now it is clear,” Singh remarked when wrestler Vinesh Phogat joined the Congress in 2024 to run in the Haryana Assembly elections. The protest’s script was created by the Congress and leaked at their party headquarters.
The former BJP MP had maintained that the truth will finally be out in court while refuting the claims of sexual assault against him.
