Digital Arrest: Cyber fraud cases are increasing across the country. Fraudsters are trapping people by adopting new methods. Recently, a case of fraud of Rs 96 lakh has come to light with a retired assistant female professor. Fraudsters intimidated her by introducing themselves as ED (Enforcement Directorate) and CBI officers and threatened to implicate her in money laundering.

How did the fraud happen?

The fraudsters called the woman and told her that her name had come up in a money laundering case. They talked to the woman posing as fake officers to gain her trust. Then they put her under digital arrest (arrest on phone calls) and kept threatening her for three days. Out of fear, the woman broke her FD and transferred Rs 96 lakh to their account.

Such incidents have happened before

This is not the first case. Earlier also, a 65-year-old woman in Indore was duped of Rs 46 lakh. The fraudsters called her posing as CBI officers and extorted money by threatening her for 5 days.

How to avoid fraudsters?

No government agency asks you to transfer money over the phone. If someone is asking for money by claiming to be an officer, then immediately complain to the police.

Do not share your bank account and personal details with anyone.

Do not take any decision in haste out of fear, first consult an expert. If someone calls you like this, do not panic, but immediately complain to the cyber police or local police station. Only your vigilance can save you from the trap of fraudsters.
