You may or may not remember this film of Amitabh Bachchan. Making a film is no less than a risk. That is why it is said that where there is risk there is love too. Amitabh Bachchan has worked in many films. Some were hits and some were flops. But do you know that he had worked in Shashi Kapoors dream project which proved to be a big flop. In this film Big B played a trick on Sholays Gabbar.
This film was released in India in 1991 Ajooba. It is a fantasy film. In those days working on fantasy films was no less than a big risk for the makers. But Shashi Kapoor did it. This proved to be Shashi Kapoors first and last Hindi film as a director.
Before Ajooba Shashi Kapoor had made films like 36 Chowringhee Lane Kaliyug Vijeta and Utsav. These films gave him fame and praise as a maker but due to the distance from the general audience these were not that successful commercially. Especially Utsav caused a lot of financial loss to Shashi Kapoor. To recover from that he made Ajooba but this too flopped at the box office.
This was Shashi Kapoors Indo-Russian project. The film was made in Russian and Hindi languages. It was released in Russia in July 1990 and in India in April 1991. The film was a hit in Russia but flopped in India and this affected Shashi Kapoor the most. It is said that he gave 5-6 years of his life for this film. But after sinking in the film he could not recover mentally. He incurred so much loss in Ajoobaa that he could not make any other film.
According to IMDB Shashi Kapoor only wanted to produce this film and wanted his elder brother Raj Kapoor to direct it. But things did not work out due to Raj Kapoors ill health. And on the advice of Amitabh Bachchan Shashi Kapoor directed this film along with director Gennady Vasiliev.
Instead of telling the story seriously the film had too much masala and comedy which the audience could not digest. As a result it became difficult to recover the heavy budget. Amjad Khan was chosen to play the villain in the film. Amjad Khan shot the film for a month.
After that Shashi Kapoor replaced him with Amrish Puri. Amjad Khan blamed Amitabh Bachchan for this. He said that due to personal problems between Amitabh and him Shashi Kapoor replaced him on Amitabhs request. This was the first and last film directed by Shashi Kapoor.
Although there are 6 songs in the film one song of the film Mera Jaane Bahar Aaya became very popular. It is said that this was one of the biggest budget films of that time. The total budget of this film was Rs 8 crore but in India this film could not earn even half of its budget. The film collected 3.80 crores in India and 4.5 crores worldwide. This was one of the biggest disaster films of the year 1991 and Amitabh Bachchans career.
