A four-month-old female puppy was found in Medinipur town with a rubber band tightly tied around her mouth, leaving her in severe pain and distress. The incident came to light when local resident Shibu Rana reached out for help, informing animal rescuer and activist Damayanti Sen about the situation. “Didi, please rescue her. She is in immense pain. I know it’s far from Kolkata, but please try to do something,” Shibu told Sen.
Sen, a passionate animal lover known for her hands-on involvement in rescues, immediately got in touch with actress Swastika Mukherjee, who has long been active in animal welfare. Mukherjee stepped in to coordinate the rescue efforts. “The moment I heard about her condition, I knew we had to act fast. Every minute mattered,” she said.
She travelled to Medinipur, rescued the puppy, provided initial treatment, and brought her to Kolkata. She was admitted to the Animal Kingdom shelter , where she is now under medical care and showing signs of improvement. Swastika Mukherjee, who remained in constant contact throughout the rescue, named the puppy Rangini.
Speaking on the increasing cases of animal cruelty , Damayanti Sen said, “Animal cruelty is a serious concern. These incidents highlight the need for stricter laws and better enforcement. Every life matters, and we must ensure that such cases are reported and acted upon swiftly.”
She added, “It’s heartbreaking to see such cruelty. But knowing that there are people willing to help gives me hope.”
As Rangini recovers, the rescue has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger measures against animal abuse, with activists calling for greater vigilance and legal action.
