New Delhi: Australia secured a spot in the Champions Trophy semifinals after their match against Afghanistan in Lahore was called off due to rain. The important game between Australia and Afghanistan was abandoned in Lahore due to rain with the 2023 ODI World Cup champions in a strong position in their 273-run chase having reached 109/1 in 12.5 overs. Travis Head was in explosive form making 59 off 40 before the rain delay.
In Group B Afghanistan Australia and South Africa are still competing for a spot in the semifinals while England were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday after their defeat to Afghanistan. This loss prompted captain Jos Buttler to resign on Friday just one day before their final match against South Africa.
Now Afghanistan must wait for the outcome of the England vs South Africa match. Both Afghanistan and South Africa will have three points but the Proteas boast a significantly better run rate. For Afghanistan to advance they need England to defeat South Africa by a margin of 207 runs. If South Africa wins Temba Bavumas team will secure their spot in the final.
