Synopsis

Meta has fired approximately 20 employees for leaking confidential company information, with additional dismissals expected. The crackdown follows Zuckerberg's complaints about repeated leaks that he claimed were damaging to the company. Meta leadership insists on protecting internal discussions as the company prepares for a competitive year in the field of AI development.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, followed through on his warning, firing approximately 20 Meta employees for leaking internal company information. The recent political shift of its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, toward US President Donald Trump has put pressure on the social media behemoth.

What led to the firings of 20 Meta employees?

Those workers who revealed "confidential information" about the social media behemoth, weeks after the tech tycoon complained about leaks.

"We inform new hires and remind them on a regular basis that it is against our policies to divulge internal information, regardless of the reason," a Meta representative said in a statement.

"As a result of our recent investigation, about 20 employees were fired for disclosing private information outside the company, and we anticipate more," as reported by The NY Post.

How is Meta cracking down on leaks?

Meta did not disclose how they identified the alleged rogue employees or the departments in which they were employed.

The crackdown comes after multiple times that statements made by Mark Zuckerberg and other high-ranking executives during internal meetings or in company-wide memos were reported in the media.

Internal dissension has plagued Meta since Zuckerberg abandoned DEI programs and the company's contentious fact-checking efforts, actions that detractors say were taken to curry favor with President Donald Trump.

Zuckerberg complained that his comments during a January Q&A session with Meta staff regarding the company's recent direction change would probably be reported by the media.

As expected, Zuckerberg's remarks were leaked right away, prompting Meta to issue a memo alerting staff members that those who did so would face termination.

The memo quoted Guy Rosen, Meta's chief information security officer, as saying that "when information is stolen or leaked, there are repercussions beyond the immediate security impact." "We all waste time that could be better spent working on our products and toward our goals and mission, and our teams become discouraged."

Later, Meta's chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, claimed that the company was "making progress on catching people," as per a report.
