Mangaluru: Following the outbreak of bird flu in Ballari and Chikkaballapur districts, authorities in Dakshina Kannada have intensified surveillance measures. A coordination committee comprising officials from the animal husbandry and health departments has been formed to monitor the situation.

The committee is scheduled to hold a meeting on March 1 to discuss precautionary measures for the district. Circulars will be issued to all health centers regarding bird flu prevention, said Dakshina Kannada District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Thimmaiah.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, he noted that bird flu cases are being reported every year and advised the public to ensure proper cooking of meat to eliminate harmful microorganisms. Awareness campaigns will also be conducted through the coordination committee, he added.

No monkey fever cases reported in DK

Dakshina Kannada last reported a case of Kyasanur Forest Disease (monkey fever) in 2014 at Beluvai. While the district has not seen any recent cases, authorities are maintaining vigilance due to reports of infections in neighboring districts.

People living near forests and forest department staff are at risk of contracting the disease if bitten by infected ticks. Dr. Naveenchandra Kulal, district surveillance officer, advised precautionary measures such as bathing in hot water and washing clothes in hot water after returning from forested areas. He also recommended applying DEPA insect repellent oil to prevent tick bites.
