Online Scam: Frauds related to online shopping are increasing continuously. Recently a case has come to light in which a college employee ordered a mobile phone through Cash on Delivery (COD) but got packets of soap and biscuits in the parcel. This incident happened on 13 February in Sheikh Sarai, South Delhi. This incident has raised questions on the security of online delivery and misuse of customer data.

The victim had ordered a mobile phone worth Rs 16,680 on 11 February. He chose the cash-on-delivery option. On 12 February, he received a call from a person who introduced himself as a delivery agent. The victim said, "I told him to deliver it the next day, as I was going to be at home. The next day he called me 3 times around 11 am and he gave a box of a mobile phone in the packaging of the shopping website, which he had ordered."

A payment of Rs 16,680 was made.
Trusting the victim, the victim made a UPI payment of Rs 16,680. When the victim reached his office and opened the package, he realised that he had been cheated.

Delivery agent missing
The victim immediately dialled the delivery agent's number. Initially, he was assured that the problem would be solved by filing a complaint on the e-commerce platform. But after a while, the agent's phone was switched off. His email sent to the shopping website also did not receive any response.

Police started investigation
Interestingly, on the same day, another delivery boy arrived with a parcel of mobile and asked for a payment of Rs 16,680. The victim was shocked and refused to take the parcel. After the complaint, the police registered a case and started an investigation.

You should take some precautions to avoid online shopping fraud. Here are some special tips-

Always shop from well-known websites like Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, and TataCliq. Before shopping from an unknown or new e-commerce platform, check its reviews and ratings.
The URL of the real website starts with "https://". Avoid fake sites that mimic the name of the real website.

Verify the identity of the delivery agent before making payment.

Avoid sharing your personal details over the phone.
