New Delhi: On Tuesday (March 4) Indian mens cricket team captain Rohit Sharma made history by becoming the first skipper to reach the final of all four ICC events. Rohit has guided India to the finals of the World Test Championship in June 2023 the ODI World Cup in November 2023 the T20 World Cup in June 2024 and now the Champions Trophy in March 2025.
MS Dhoni on the other hand led India to the T20 World Cup finals in 2007 and 2014 the ODI World Cup final in 2011 and the Champions Trophy final in 2013 but never had the opportunity to play in the World Test Championship final. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson led his team to the final of the 2019 ODI World Cup the World Test Championship in June 2021 and the T20 World Cup in November 2021 but New Zealand never qualified for the Champions Trophy final during his captaincy.
Rohit Sharma who became the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to lift an ICC trophy in June 2024 will aim to secure his second ICC title on Sunday (March 9) when India faces the winner of the second semifinal between New Zealand and South Africa.
Having taken over as Indias full-time white-ball captain in November 2021 Rohit has led India to victory in all four of their matches in the Champions Trophy 2025 so far. Under his captaincy the world No. 1 ODI team triumphed over Bangladesh by six wickets in the tournament opener in Dubai on February 20 followed by a similar 6-wicket win against Pakistan in their second Group A match.
In Indias final Group A encounter against New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday (March 2) they emerged victorious by 44 runs.
In the semifinal against Australia on Tuesday the Indian team was set a target of 265 and thanks to Virat Kohlis 84-run knock off 98 balls India successfully chased it down in 48.1 overs losing six wickets along the way.
In addition to Kohli Shreyas Iyer contributed significantly with a knock of 45 runs while KL Rahul remained not out at 42. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Karnataka finished the chase for India by hitting a six on the very first ball of the 49th over delivered by Glenn Maxwell.
Kohli was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance with the bat in the ninth ICC knockout game between India and Australia.
