According to statistics 1,00,000 children are born deaf every year and this is can be a huge catastrophe for the nation.
Dr Christopher De Souza, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Lilavati Hospital said, “Lilavati Hospital has successfully performed over 500 cochlear implant surgeries for children, transforming their lives, and restoring their ability to hear. 10% of these procedures involved revision surgeries for children who previously received implants and required further medical intervention. Given that the overall cost of a cochlear implant exceeds 8 lakhs, financial support has been crucial in making these surgeries accessible to underprivileged children. This remarkable accomplishment has been made possible through the relentless efforts of Mr Prashant Mehta, whose dedication has been instrumental in driving this initiative forward.”
Dr. Christopher De Souza further added, Hearing loss in children can have profound consequences on their speech, cognitive development, and overall quality of life. When left undiagnosed or untreated, it causes communication barriers, academic struggles, and social isolation. “Due to advancements in medical technology, implantable hearing devices now offer effective solutions to restore hearing and help children live normal lives. The key lies in early diagnosis, as the sooner a child receives intervention, the better their chances of developing speech and language skills. Parents and caregivers should be vigilant and seek medical guidance at the earliest signs of hearing difficulties.”
