Less than a minute after entering the game, Liverpool substitute Harvey Elliott scored the game-winning goal to secure a lucky 1-0 victory against Paris St. Germain, who dominated their visitors in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg.

After a layoff from fellow replacement Darwin Nunez, Elliott scored against the flow of play in the 87th minute to give Paris a victory that was hardly earned.

Goalkeeper Alisson made a series of incredible saves to keep Arne Slot’s squad afloat until they scored on their opening try.

With a difficult return leg at Anfield on Tuesday, Luis Enrique’s PSG, who had won 18 and lost two of their previous 20 games, were forced to lament their many squandered opportunities.

Liverpool’s effort at a high press did not last long, as PSG got off to a great start.

Dembele’s cutback gave the home team their first clear opportunity in the 16th minute as the France striker outran two defenders to burst down the right wing and Joao Neves skied his shot over the bar.

In the 20th minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s incredible curled shot was disallowed for offside after a VAR review, raising concerns for Liverpool once again.

Ibrahima Konate’s challenge sent Bradley Barcola down, triggering another video review for a possible red card, but the visitors managed to hold onto ten men.

Alisson denied Dembele after parrying Neves’ 25-meter attempt as Liverpool went into survival mode. Barcola’s initial shot was stopped before his second soared over when the ball entered his path.

Early in a lopsided second half, the Brazilian goalie produced stops left, right, and center, and his solid hand was there once again to stop Kvaratskhelia.

In an attempt to change the pace, Slot substituted Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota with Curtis Jones and Nunez, but PSG maintained their lead.

Ten minutes from the end, Alisson stretched once again to turn away Desire Doue’s rocket and was instrumental in the build-up to the goal.

Nunez played into Elliott’s path after winning Alisson’s long ball with the time running down. Elliott calmly slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

“Full credit to the team,” Elliott said. “It was evident that they (PSG) were a little worn out at the end. They were opening up a lot of opportunities, so it was my responsibility to seize the moment, and happily it did.

“It was the performance of my life,” Alisson stated.

His words, “We had to be ready to suffer,”

“We put forth a lot of effort. We wasted so many opportunities. Harvey then in and scored the goal at the end. It’s not real. An amazing tale. A wonderful evening for us.
