In a rare dismissal, Pakistan cricketer Saud Shakeel was timed out during the final of the ongoing President’s Trophy between the State Bank of Pakistan and Pakistan Television in Rawalpindi. Shakeel is the first ever Pakistan cricketer and seventh overall in first-class history to be dismissed in such fashion.
During the Day 2 of the contest, SBP lost two wickets in as many dismissals, and it caught Shakeel unawares.
Consequently, when Shakeel eventually managed to reach the middle and take guard, he had exceeded the stipulated time limit of three minutes, within which a new batter following the fall of a wicket must be ready to face his first delivery.
PTV captain Amad Butt appealed for timed out and the umpires agreed.
Fast bowler Muhammad Shahzad saw himself on the verge of taking a hat-trick after he dismissed SBP batters Umar Amin and Fawad Alam in consecutive deliveries.
Shakeel then breached the time limit to be adjudged timed out, and the next batter – Irfan Khan – was bowled for a golden duck, giving Shahzad his hat-trick.
From 128the /1, SBP collapsed to 128/5 within the space of three deliveries of a single over.
Interestingly, due to Ramadan during which Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset, the first-class match isn’t being played during the day. The contest starts from 7:30 PM IST and continues till 2:30 AM IST including tea and dinner breaks.
Shakeel was part of Pakistan’s wretched Champions Trophy campaign as the hosts exited the competition in the group-stage itself without a win.
Pakistan started their campaign with a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in Karachi, where Shakeel opened for them and managed 6 off 19.
The Mohammad Rizwan-led side then flew to Dubai to face India where Shakeel was pushed to no.3 spot and scored a half-century as Pakistan were bowled out for 241. India chased down the target in 42.3 overs for a six-wicket win.
Their third and final group match against Bangladesh was abandoned without a toss.
