As the seasons transition, many people fall sick due to sudden weather changes. From mild fevers to severe respiratory infections, seasonal flu can affect anyone, but some groups are more vulnerable than others. More than half of Delhi-NCR families have been experiencing symptoms of viral illness over the past month. A recent survey revealed that at least 54 per cent of households have one or more members showing flu-like symptoms due to seasonal shifts.

Seasonal Flu Cases on the Rise in Delhi-NCR

Hospitals across the region have reported an increase in patients suffering from pneumonia, bronchitis, and other severe respiratory infections. The survey, which gathered responses from over 13,000 residents in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, shows that people over 50 and young children are the most vulnerable to these viral illnesses.

Who is More Susceptible to Seasonal Flu?

According to the survey, people with pre-existing health conditions are at a higher risk of contracting viral infections. People with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD, and cardiac diseases are more prone to severe complications. The survey found that 63 per cent of respondents were men, while 37 per cent were women, indicating that flu cases are widespread across demographics.

Common Symptoms of Seasonal Flu

The symptoms of flu caused by seasonal changes include:
  • Fever and chills
  • Persistent cough
  • Headache
  • Fatigue and body aches
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Respiratory issues such as shortness of breath
While these symptoms are generally mild, they can worsen in people with weakened immune systems.

How to Protect Yourself from Seasonal Flu

With flu cases rising, it is crucial to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection. Here are some effective ways to keep yourself safe:

1. Strengthen Your Immune System

A strong immune system can help you fight against seasonal flu. Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Include foods like citrus fruits, ginger, garlic, turmeric, and green leafy vegetables, which have natural immunity-boosting properties.

2. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of fluids helps in flushing out toxins from the body and keeps your respiratory tract clear. Herbal teas, warm soups, and water-rich foods like cucumbers and oranges can aid in maintaining hydration levels.

3. Maintain Proper Hygiene

Practising good hygiene is essential in preventing flu transmission. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, use alcohol-based sanitisers, and avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

4. Get Enough Rest

Lack of sleep weakens the immune system, making you more prone to infections. Ensure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night to allow your body to recover and fight off viruses effectively.

5. Avoid Crowded Places

During peak flu seasons, try to avoid crowded areas where viruses can spread quickly. If you must go out, wear a mask and maintain social distancing in public places.
6. Consult a Doctor if Symptoms Persist: If you experience prolonged flu symptoms or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. Timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications like pneumonia and bronchitis.
