Police in Thailand have detained three foreign tourists who allegedly attacked a Russian man in Phuket as the man attempted to prevent them from raping two women.
The injured man, identified as Aleksandr Belinskii, suffered facial injuries while fighting off the attackers, who reportedly tried to assault two Finnish women during the early hours of Saturday, The Nation reported.
The women told police that while they were in their hotel room, three men barged in and attempted to rape them.
Belinskii said he was passing by the room when he witnessed the attack. He intervened to stop the men, who then turned on him and attacked him before fleeing the scene.
Later, Patong police discovered that the suspects – two German citizens and a Turkish national – were staying in a nearby hotel, as reported by Khaosod English.
The suspects claimed that they had only intended to escort the women to their hotel room after spending time at an entertainment venue.
They stated that a Russian man had intervened, claiming he was the Finnish women’s boyfriend, which led to an argument and the subsequent physical assault.
Police are expanding the investigation.
