An actor film director screenwriter lyricist and editor he has now retired from the industry. A recipient of the National Film Award he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992 and later received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award India’s highest honour in cinema in 2015 for his contributions to Indian films and the arts. Born in Pakistan he later moved to Delhi where he studied at Hindu College. A huge admirer of Dilip Kumar he changed his name from Harikrishan Goswami to Manoj Kumar after being inspired by Kumar’s character in the 1949 film Shabnam. Todays spotlight is on veteran actor Manoj Kumars son Kunal Goswami who followed in his father’s footsteps and became an actor. He made his debut in his father’s 1981 film Kranti and later played his first leading role in the 1983 films Ghungroo and Kalakaar. After Ghungroo failed at the box office Kunal tried to gave his best and took on the responsibility of carrying forward his father’s legacy. He then starred in Kalakaar opposite Sridevi and the popular song Neele Neele Ambar Par was picturised on him. Kunals name was widely discussed and many believed he would carry forward his fathers legacy in the film industry. He put in his best efforts and consistently worked on films to establish himself. He appeared in several movies including Do Gulab (1983) Ricky (1986) Aakhri Baazi (1989) and Paap Ki Kamaee (1990). However after the release of Numbri Aadmi and Vishkanya in 1991 he took a long break from acting. He made a comeback in 1999 with Jai Hind directed by his father but unfortunately none of his films were successful. Following this he quit acting after 1999. Kunal Goswamis decision to leave Bollywood was primarily due to his unsuccessful acting career. Most of the films he starred in failed at the box office and even being the son of superstar Manoj Kumar did not help him much. However he did leave a mark with his strong performance in the Doordarshan show Alag Alag. After quitting the film industry Kunal started his own business. He married Riti Goswami in 2005 and now runs a catering business in Delhi.
