The Warriors have been reprimanded for the transformational quota breach.

South African domestic side Warriors has been reprimanded for breaching the country’s transformational quota rule for not including enough players of color in their side against Dolphins in the One-Day Cup on February 16.

According to a Wised report, the Warriors fielded only two black African players in their playing 11 rather than the required three, without any prior explanation. Cricket South Africa (CSA) requires a minimum of six players of color in domestic sides, with three of those being Black African players.

“A monetary fine has also been included, with 50 percent payable before the end of the current financial year. The remaining 50 percent will be suspended for five years and will only be activated if a similar breach occurs within that period,” CSA said in a statement.

This is unlike the requirements for the national side. There, the target is six players of color including two black African players but it’s calculated as an average over the course of the season and not for individual games.

This is to address the deep-rooted inequalities in the country, where the minority white population controls the majority of the resources and power. The people of color are in the majority but are still reeling from the impact of the long-standing apartheid.

Warriors won by 126 runs and were awarded five points but due to the penalty, they have been docked exactly that number of points. The win had put them in third position in the table but the penalty pulled them back to fourth, ending their advancement to the knockout stages of the competition.

According to the report, other teams have also missed the targets in some games but apparently took the permission of the board beforehand.

Speaking to Independent Media, Dolphins chief executive, Heinrich Strydom said: “The game that we played against Warriors, the first game, they did not adhere to the transformation requirements. CSA went through a process and then basically confirmed that the Warriors will lose their points from the game and we get points from that game. We didn’t even bring it to their attention, it was CSA who picked it up.”
