Indian Railways is gearing up for a major transformation in transportation. After transitioning from diesel to electric engines the Railway Ministry is now preparing to introduce India’s first hydrogen-powered train. According to reports this eco-friendly train is expected to start running on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana by March 31 2025.
The Research Design and Standard Organisation (RDSO) has developed the blueprint for this innovative train making India one of the few nations adopting hydrogen fuel technology for rail travel. This step marks a significant move toward sustainable and clean energy in railway operations.
The train will be equipped with three specialized coaches designed to store hydrogen cylinders and house advanced systems like fuel cell converters batteries and air reservoirs ensuring efficient and smooth operation.
The hydrogen-powered train will be capable of reaching a top speed of 110 km/h.
As part of the Hydrogen for Heritage initiative Indian Railways aims to introduce 35 such trains across heritage and hill routes. Each train will cost around Rs. 80 crore with an additional Rs. 70 crore needed for supporting infrastructure.
These trains come with several advantages including zero carbon emissions higher energy efficiency long-term cost savings and quieter operation. While the upfront investment is substantial the long-term environmental and economic benefits make them a smart and sustainable choice for the future of Indian Railways.
India Hydrogen Train Key Features
Maximum speed: To ensure efficient travel the train can reach a maximum speed of 110 km/h.
Passenger capacity: It can hold 2638 people making it suitable for a large number of commuters.
Engine power: The train will have a 1200 horsepower engine making it the worlds largest hydrogen-powered train.
. This is slated to be among the longest hydrogen train in the world presently. It will also be among the maximum powered hydrogen trains in the world
India Hydrogen Train Route
The train will cover a significant distance with multiple stops to serve passengers along the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. This route was chosen for the launch due to Haryanas well-developed railway network and the growing need for eco-friendly transportation in the region.
To kick-start this transition Indian Railways has sanctioned a Rs. 111.83 crore pilot project to modify an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake with a Hydrogen Fuel Cell. This project also includes setting up the necessary infrastructure for its operation on the Jind-Sonipat route under the Northern Railway zone.
