Indian cricket team's young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant believes that while the Indian Premier League (IPL) is highly attractive, young cricketers should prioritize playing for the national team. According to him, if a player's ultimate goal is to represent India, everything else will automatically fall into place.
In an interview with Jio Hotstar, Pant shared, "Since childhood, my only dream was to play for India. I never thought about the IPL. Yes, IPL is a big platform, but if your goal is to play for the country, then everything else will align automatically."
The 27-year-old cricketer made his international debut in 2017 and was also part of the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy, although he did not get a chance to play. Reflecting on his journey, he said, "I always believed that I had to play for India. By God's grace, I got this opportunity at the age of 18, and I am truly grateful for it."
Pant is widely recognized for his aggressive batting style and his ability to hit sixes with one hand. Often, his bat slips from his hands while playing certain shots. Explaining the reason behind this, Pant said:
"This happens because my lower-hand grip is loose. I use the lower hand only for slight support, but sometimes it takes control. That is why I maintain a strong grip with my upper hand."
He further added, "When the ball is pitched wide or short, it becomes challenging to hit a shot. The success rate of such shots is only 30-40%, but I take that risk depending on the match situation. This is my mindset."
Pant also revealed that his childhood training in gymnastics has significantly benefited his career. He shared, "I used to do gymnastics as a child. My coach always told me that it would help me in the future. The Indian team's trainer, Basu Sir, also told me that I should thank my gymnastics coach because I am still reaping the benefits of that training."
Practicing hand springs has helped him enhance his fitness and flexibility, making him a key player in the Indian cricket team.
Pant’s journey is a true inspiration for young cricketers, proving that with hard work, determination, and the right mindset, success will follow.
