Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) charges its customers for cancelling railway tickets. This charge varies depending on the type of ticket and the timing of cancellation. If you are fully aware of the cancellation and refund policy, it can help you minimize the loss, whether your ticket is confirmed, waitlisted, or partially confirmed. Passengers need to stay updated about these charges. The reason for this is that Indian Railways keeps changing these charges from time to time. Let us also give you detailed information about IRCTC's e-ticket cancellation charge.
Cancellation charge of confirmed train ticket
When you cancel a confirmed train ticket, the amount deducted depends on how much time before the scheduled departure time and date of the train is cancelled. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled online more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, a minimum cancellation charge is levied per passenger.
If one cancels an AC First Class/Executive Class ticket, one will have to pay Rs 240 + GST. If one cancels an AC 2 Tier/First Class ticket, one will have to pay Rs 200 + GST. If one cancels an AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy ticket, one will have to pay Rs 180 + GST. If one cancels a Sleeper Class ticket, one will have to pay Rs 120 and if one cancels a Second Class ticket, one will have to pay Rs 60. These cancellation charges will be levied per passenger.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled online from 48 hours to 12 hours before the departure, the cancellation charge will be 25 percent of the total fare, subject to a minimum charge, plus GST applicable for all AC classes.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled online between 12 hours to 4 hours before departure, the cancellation charge will be 50% of the fare, subject to the minimum charges mentioned, plus applicable GST for all AC classes.
If a confirmed ticket is not cancelled online or TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) is not filed at least 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, no refund will be given.
Cancellation Charges for Waiting List Tickets
The set of refund rules for cancellation of waiting list tickets is different from confirmed tickets. If a waiting list ticket is cancelled online up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure, a cancellation charge of Rs 20 + GST per passenger will be deducted. The rest of the fare will be refunded.
Auto cancellation of non-confirmed tickets
If all passengers on the ticket remain waitlisted even after the first charting is prepared, the ticket is automatically cancelled by the ticketing computer system. In such cases, the full amount is refunded without any cancellation charge.
Cancellation charges for waitlisted tickets removed from charting
If a waitlisted e-ticket remains waitlisted even after the reservation chart is prepared, the names of all passengers booked on the waitlisted PNR will be removed from the reserve chart, and the ticket will be automatically cancelled. The full fare will be refunded without deducting any cancellation charge.
What are the rules for cancelling Tatkal tickets?
There will be no refund for cancelled confirmed Tatkal tickets. According to the IRCTC website, till 12.3.2025, charges for accidental cancellation and waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellation will be deducted as per existing railway standards. Charges for cancellation of train e-ticket in case of train delay are different and are mentioned separately.
