Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has been named as one of the World’s top Universities for study of 14 subjects in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025.
For the first time, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been ranked under the top 100 subject in the World.
The 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released today by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provides independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 18,300 individual university programmes, taken by students at more than 1700 universities in 100 global locations, spanning 55 academic disciplines.
VIT’s performance showcases a dynamic trend, with 4 subjects demonstrating improved rankings, 8 maintaining their positions and 2 subjects entering the rankings for the first time. This achievement underscores VIT’s commitment to academic excellence and research prowess across a diverse range of fields.
VIT achieved significant progress in broad subject areas of Engineering & Technology where the rank has soared from 212 to 142, and Natural Sciences climbed to 362 from the 401-450 band. VIT has retained its position in the 351-400 Band for Biological Sciences and 551-600 Band for Business & Management Studies. VIT has also claimed its spot in the 351-400 Band in the Agriculture & Forestry category.
In Computer Science & Information Systems, a significant leap from 136th in 2024 to 110th in 2025 has been achieved. Furthermore, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence has secured a position within the 51-100 band. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering have maintained their positions within the bands of 151-200, 201-250, and 252-300 respectively. Within the Natural Sciences category, Material Science has improved its ranking to the 151-200 band from 201-250 in 2024, Chemistry has risen to the 301-350 band from 351-400, and Physics & Astronomy has advanced to the 401-450 band from 451-500. In the Statistics & Operational Research Category, VIT has earned a position in the Band 251-275.
