Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday said the water tariff could be hiked by one paise per litre which has not been revised since 2014 in the city.
“In view of the losses, BWSSB has proposed a hike of 7-8 paise per litre. The government however is contemplating a one paise hike per litre. We will discuss the same with MLAs from the city and take a decision,” Shivakumar, who also handles the Bengaluru development portfolio, told in the council. BWSSB stands for Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board.
Shivakumar cautioned the builders who have constructed large apartments but none of them have paid deposits to the BWSSB. “They have taken connections illegally. We have issued notices to them,” he said.
The deputy CM also called the solid waste management system in the city working as a mafia. “A tender was called in the past, but the vendors have collectively moved court, stopping all work. Some MLAs are blackmailing us about garbage dumping pits, I don’t want to take their names,” he said, adding that some are demanding 800 crores for their constituencies.
“Garbage trucks are parked in Mahadevapura constituency for several days now and it has become a big issue. We are planning to visit Indore to study their model,” the deputy CM said. He also clarified that while the opposition has alleged that he made Rs 15,000 crores but the government is yet to issue a tender.
The deputy CM also encouraged an all-party delegation to go to Delhi and urge the centre to issue compensation for those who were displaced by Alamatti dam. “An all-party delegation must go to Delhi and urge the Centre to issue a Gazette notification on the third stage of Upper Krishna project.”
