Travel advice warning issued over buses and taxis in winter sun destination

In a concerning trend over the past two months, Bolivia has seen more than 60 fatalities resulting from bus accidents.

The recent deadly events coincide with Bolivia's Oruro Carnival celebrations, one of Latin America's largest festivals, which attracts numerous tourists and revellers.

A devastating collision involving two buses last weekend, one of which was en route to the festival, left at least 37 people dead, according to the .

The in response to the spate of fatal incidents since the beginning of the year, has updated its travel advice for those seeking the Winter sun in Bolivia.

The latest advisory cautions: "Accidents involving public transport, especially long-distance buses, have affected British people."

Highlighting the differences in safety regulations, the alert continues: "Bus drivers drive for longer than would be permitted under European laws. Many taxis and most bus companies do not meet European standards and rarely have seatbelts. Safety standards for bus transportation around Bolivia vary greatly between providers."

Travellers are encouraged to book with companies that focus on serving tourists, acknowledging these may be "more expensive" but typically boast "tend to have better safety standards, including seatbelts and better-trained drivers".

Furthermore, the guidance advises: "You should research the type of bus you will be taking carefully before travelling."

Additionally, the FCDO cautions UK travellers "against all but essential travel to parts of Bolivia".

For those considering driving instead of bus travel, a timely reminder is issued about Bolivia's climatic conditions. As March concludes the rainy season, hazards such as landslides and obstructed routes remain a possibility.

Fuel shortages are another challenge currently faced by visitors, with petrol and diesel scarcities leading to extended waits at filling stations and potential disruptions to local transport services.
