While gardens full of flowers and other plants may look beautiful, they can be quite high-maintenance, and many homeowners don't have the time to constantly care for them.
With a recent study confirming that 67% of people in the UK prefer a low-maintenance garden, many amateur gardeners will likely be looking for plants that are easiest to care for. Gardening experts at Yell have shared a five bulbs that can be planted in any garden but require very little maintenance - and return with flowers year after year.
Daffodils are a rather low-maintenance but long-living plant. These bulbs should be planted early autumn, ideally in September, which will leave you with stunning blooms come the following spring.
For planting these, the RHS recommends: "Bulbs are quick and easy to plant. Just be sure to set them at the correct depth in the ground - equivalent to three times the bulb's height.
This will help to ensure they flower well for many years to come." And while they will require occasional watering, fertilising, and mulching, they aren't a plant that will take up too much of your time.
BluebellsBluebells are not just low-maintenance but also thrive best in shady areas of the garden. Purchase bulbs from a garden centre during the spring months, when they will be easily established in your garden. For planing in your garden, the National Trust advise placing them 10cm deep and 10cm apart, with the pointed tip facing upward.
Crocus plants can be grown in direct sunlight or shadier areas - and they'll bring plenty of bees to your yard. Crocus bulbs are another that should be planted in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the autumn crocus can be planted in spring.
SnowdropsSnowdrops are low-maintenance plants that can be grown in pretty much any garden. While the flowers don't require much work, their bulbs can dry out quickly, so they should be planted as soon as possible after purchasing.
The RHS advises planting the bulbs in a partly shaded position in moist but well-drained soil with leafmould or garden compost. Just be sure the soil doesn't dry out during the summer.
AlliumsThese architectural flowers, are another that will bring the bees to your garden. They are also perfect for garden borders. They should be planted between September and November for perfect growth, and if you have soil with a high clay content, then be sure to add some compost when planting your allium bulbs.
