Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has received the lie detector test report of Hitesh Mehta, the prime accused in the ₹122 crore New India Cooperative Bank scam. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina submitted the report to the EOW on March 13, two days after the test was conducted on March 11.

According to sources, the test results were negative, indicating possible deception in Mehta's responses. However, as per forensic experts, lie detector tests are not admissible as legal evidence in court but serve as investigative tools to assist in ongoing probes.

A lie detector test, or polygraph test, can yield three possible outcomes:

  • Truthful (No Deception Indicated - NDI):
The subject’s physiological responses remain stable, with no signs of stress or anxiety linked to deception. The examiner concludes that the individual is telling the truth.

  • Deceptive (Deception Indicated - DI):
The subject exhibits significant physiological changes, such as an elevated heart rate, irregular breathing, and sweating, when answering certain questions. These signs suggest deception or that the person is withholding information.

  • Inconclusive (No Clear Determination - INC):
The test does not provide a definite indication of truthfulness or deception. This can occur due to nervousness, medical conditions, or improper test conditions. In such cases, further testing or alternative investigative methods may be required.

While the lie detector test raises doubts about Mehta’s claims, investigators are relying on forensic audits, financial records, and witness statements to strengthen their case. The EOW has also initiated legal proceedings to track down other accused individuals and recover embezzled funds. Further updates on the investigation are awaited as authorities proceed with additional interrogations and financial scrutiny.
