Bollywood has given us several actors who have mesmerised us with their incredible talent and performances. Even though their are no longer with us their work continue to speak and cherished widely among audiences. Today we will talk about one such actor who worked in over 250 films and was mainly renowned for essaying roles as a mother and grandmother in several films.
We are talking about none other than Achala Sachdev who began her career in Bollywood as a child actress. Soon she became renowned for essaying roles as a mother and grandmother in films like Arzoo (1965) Waqt (1965) Mere Naam Joker (1970) Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971) Chandni (1989) Dilwale Dhulhania Le Jayenge (1995) Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001) Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) and more.
Born on May 3 1920 in Peshawar Acharya was from a Punjabi family. At a very young age she started working to support her family financially. She worked as a radio announcer at All India Radio (AIR) Lahore. After the partition her family moved from Peshawar to Delhi and she resumed her work at AIR Delhi. During her time she interviewed film personalities and even made cameo appearances in films.
In 1950 she got an opportunity to portray the role of Dev Anands sister in the film Dilruba which rose her to fame and opened doors for several acting opportunities. Later her performances in films like Sangam Footpath Dil Ek Mandir and Miss Mary garnered her widespread appreciation.
Achala Sachdevs marital life
On the personal front Achala was married to filmmaker Gyan Sachdeva with whom she had a son Jothin Sachdev. However after few years of marriage the couple got divorced and her son moved to US.
Following that she married British National Clifford Douglas Peters and moved to Pune. Unfortunately in 2002 her husband passed way and she became quite lonely and depressed in the city.
Achala Sachdevs tragic death
On September 8 Sachdev suffered a fracture in her femur when she went into her kitchen to get a glass of water. She was shifted to the Poona Hospital and Research Centre but discharged soon. Then she was re-admit as she was diagnosed with multiple embolisms in her brain. This resulted in total paralysis and the loss of vision. For seven months the actress was bed-ridden at the Poona Hospital and Research Centre (PHRC) Pune. She passed away on April 30 2012 at the age of 91.
