Dan Burn's response to Alan Shearer's 'retirement' message after Newcastle heroics

Alan Shearer has revealed Dan Burn’s tongue-in-cheek response to the legend’s joke about him hanging up his boots. Burn became a Magpies hero on Sunday with against in the final victory at Wembley.

The towering 6ft 7in star from Blyth, Northumberland, just before half-time, escaping Alexis Mac Allister and connecting with Kieran Trippier's corner to score a thumping header. Yet, the goal wasn’t the only remarkable aspect of Burn's display.

His all-action performance saw him contribute to both the defence and the attack as Newcastle secured a 2-1 victory over the best team in England this season, ending a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

After becoming the first Newcastle player to score at Wembley since 2000, Burn was named man of the match, capping off a dream week that also saw him earn his first senior England call-up. The 32-year-old’s included a pint with Newcastle icon , who recalled their conversation on podcast.

A jubilant Shearer said: "Where do we start with big Dan Burn? I was having a pint with him last night and I said 'you might as well f***ing retire, man!'

"I said 'because the week you've had is not getting any better'. When I said that he replied [jokingly] 'I might just go [retire] on Friday at Wembley!'"

Shearer continued: “The Newcastle players are all off to Dubai as a team and I said to Dan, ‘it’s typical, you get called into the England squad and you can’t have five or six days break in the sun now'. He said ‘you know what, I don’t give a damn’. He can’t wait to get up with England.”

Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions host Albania at Wembley on Friday in their first 2026 World Cup qualifier where Burn could make his England bow, before Latvia head to London on Monday for England's second of 10 group matches.

Meanwhile, reflecting on Burn's bullet header, legendary striker Shearer – who scored a few thumping headers of his own in his heyday – added: "It was a fantastic header. Eddie [Howe] afterwards said they'd been working on set-pieces for the past two weeks and how they could hurt Liverpool. I mean it worked perfectly.

“What a header. But even if he hadn’t scored that goal, the rest of his performance was so aggressive and he didn’t give anyone a sniff. It was absolutely magnificent.”

Burn was born in Blyth and was a boyhood Magpies supporter. He held a season ticket at St James’ Park and even travelled down to Wembley for the semi-final defeat to in 2000.

Once on the books at Newcastle as a youngster, Burn experienced the sting of being let go by the club one , aged 11. Thanks to his gangly frame, he had played as a goalkeeper until he was 14.

His unusual path saw him play Non League football with Darlington before ascending the English pyramid to and Birmingham in the Championship, Wigan in League One, in the , and ultimately completing the circle back to Newcastle in 2022.
