told star Dan Burn he 'might as well retire' after playing a key role in Sunday's triumph. The towering defender, who grew up only a few miles from St. James' Park, headed the Magpies in front before scored a crucial second in a 2-1 win.
Burn is enjoying a fairytale spell in his career. Having joined boyhood club Newcastle just before the age of 30, he has become a key player under . And his excellent performances at centre-back this season have captured the attention of new boss , who gave Burn his first international call-up last week.
Just two days after being named in the squad, Burn was on the scoresheet at Wembley and celebrating Newcastle's first major domestic trophy in 70 years. Shearer, who attended the after-party, admits he forgot about Burn's upcoming England duties and jokingly advised him to quit while he is ahead.
"I would love to see big Dan Burn make his England debut this week and maybe he can find the Wembley net for his country as well as his club," Shearer wrote for .
"I'd forgotten about his England call-up when I spoke to him on Sunday night and said 'you might as well retire mate because it is not going to get any better than this'. He went 'well, you never know... something might happen on Friday' and he is right."
Burn forged his career the hard way, starting out with Darlington and taking in spells with the likes of Yeovil Town and Birmingham City before becoming a Premier League regular with Brighton.
The 6ft 7in star can play left-back but he has found a home in central defence under a manager hoping to get Newcastle back into the Champions League. And he could feature there for the Three Lions against Albania on Friday or Latvia next Monday.
Shearer believes that the way Burn's career has panned out will only have made his Wembley exploits even more satisfying.
He said: "That's the story of his career really, because he has done the hard yards to get here, and to have moments like this for the first time at the age of 32, to be called up by England, then scoring at Wembley for Newcastle to win them the cup is dreamland for him.
"As I may have mentioned on social media on Sunday evening, he is from Blyth and he is a Geordie hero. You know what, if anyone deserves it, it is him, because he is such a great lad."
