Pakistani actor Hamza Ali Abbasi getting lot of appreciation for his clear, contextual explanation on Quranic verse about polygamy.
His old statement resurfaced after fellow actor Danish Taimoor faced backlash for saying Islam allows four marriages, but he stays with one wife, Ayeza Khan, as sign of love, respect.
This sparked debate, leading to discussions on religious, historical context of polygamy in Islam.
A video clip of Hamza explaining topic has now gone viral. In video, he first laughs at question, then gives detailed explanation on historical background of verse, saying he is happy with one marriage.
He explained Quran’s permission for four marriages came in specific context, especially after Battle of Uhud, when many companions were martyred, leaving widows, orphans without support. Islam provided solution to protect them.
“At that time, Allah commanded orphans should be cared for. If you think you can’t do so properly, then marry their mothers—one, two, three, or four.”
Hamza emphasized Quran also warns about difficulty of maintaining justice among multiple wives, making monogamy preferred choice.
“Allah clearly says if you fear you can’t uphold justice, then marry only one. This is also written in same book.”
He further clarified Islam didn’t command men to marry four times, but rather put restriction on polygamy, which was unlimited in Arab society before.
“Before Islam, Arabs had no limits on polygamy. Islam imposed restriction—if must marry more than one, don’t exceed four. But even then, better option is having only one wife.”
Quran states in Surah An-Nisa (4:3):
“And if you fear you won’t deal justly with orphan girls, then marry those that please you—two, three, or four. But if you fear you won’t be just, then (marry) only one or those whom your right hands possess. That is more suitable to prevent you from wrongdoing.”
