Sky News interrupted their live broadcast following Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's phone call about the war in Ukraine and the impact on Volodymyr Zelensky. During The News Hour with Mark Austin he interrupted his show to share an update after a White House official confirmed the "talks had progressed well".

Mark said: "Just some breaking lines coming out of the Kremlin about this phone call. Trump and Putin discussed Ukraine and the two men have decided to stay in contact. There is an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to swap prisoners of war (POW) on either side. Vladimir Putin reaffirms commitment to peaceful resolution of the conflict."

The White House later confirmed that the leaders have agreed to a partial ceasefire on targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure as a result, for a period of 30 days.

Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett confirmed the prisoner exchange will take place tomorrow with the Kremlin confirming it is a "gesture of good will".

However, it has been suggested it could spell bad news for Zelensky with no movement to end the fighting with Bennett saying if the Ukrainian's surrender then Putin may stop the fighting.

Bennett explained: "Putin did not want to upset Donald Trump during this call. He didn't want to incur his wrath as Russia has a lot to gain from better relations with the US. Talk in the last month of lifting sanctions on Russia, readmitting them to the G7 making it the G8.

"But at the same time he wanted to emerge from this call with Russia's red lines still intact.

He went on to read out the Kremlin's statement for "removing the root cause of the crisis".

Bennett said: "In Putin's eyes that's the expansion of Nato and that's Kremlin's code for saying our security concerns must be met and for Ukraine to never join Nato.

"He was also probably talking about Russia not wanting any Nato troops [in Ukraine] acting as peacekeepers."

The Sky News correspondent also shared Putin's reluctance to sign up for a full ceasefire, saying "it's because he feels he doesn't have to while they have a military advantage."
