Google has released a major and important update to its Find My Device app, which will now not only allow finding lost devices but also allow real-time location tracking of friends and family members. This new feature was part of the March Android feature drop and is now being rolled out to more users.
Now not just devices, people's location will also be tracked.
Earlier, Google Maps was used to see the live location of friends and family members, but now, this feature has been added to the Find My Device app, making it a direct competitor to Apple's Find My app.
Users who were already sharing their location through Google Maps (even if they are iOS users), will now see their location in the Find My Device app as well. This means that now you will be able to track both your lost phone and loved ones from the same app.
New ‘People’ tab: Easier location tracking
The Find My Device app now has a new “People” tab that shows all contacts who have allowed their location to be shared with you. With this new feature, users can also manage their location-sharing settings, such as:
Setting the duration of location sharing (i.e. how long someone can see your location).
Viewing a list of contacts with whom location has been shared.
Turning off location sharing at any time.
