Chennai Super Kings have been one of the most successful franchises in the history of IPL winning five IPL titles and a lot of players have gained the limelight after performing for them. The 2020 season was not up to the mark for franchise but they can still be backed as one of the strongest IPL teams. 

The franchise has been home to some of the great players in the tournament like Stephen Fleming, Matthew Hayden, and Makhaya Ntini. Not just the overseas players but veteran Indian players like Lakshmipathy Balaji, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, and others have also donned the CSK jersey in the IPL. With this, we will be seeing some of the greats from CSK who have also led other IPL teams throughout different seasons.

In the 2018 season of the IPL, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) announced that the India spin maestro will lead their side. He started his career with Chennai Super Kings in 2009. He also won a couple of titles with them and represented them till 2015. Ashwin later moved to Rising Pune Super Giants in 2016/17 and then he was picked for the Punjab Kings franchise in 2018 as they signed him for INR 7.6 crores (USD 1.1 million) at the player auction and made him the captain of the side for two years (2018 and 2019). He led Kings XI Punjab to 12 wins and 16 losses resulting in a win percentage of 42.85%.

Murali Vijay was named captain of Kings XI Punjab for the remainder of the 2016 IPL season, replacing David Miller mid-tournament. He joined Kings XI Punjab in 2015 and played 17 games so far for Punjab before getting the captaincy. Murali Vijay started his career with Chennai Super Kings in 2009. He was amongst the top five run-getters after scoring 458 runs to lead CSK to a first title win. He then went on to score 434 runs in IPL 2010 helping CSK win the second consecutive title. Murali Vijay was picked up by Delhi Daredevils in 2014 and moved to Kings XI Punjab in 2015. He has captained Kings XI Punjab in eight games and they could only win three of them.

started his IPL career in 2008 with the Chennai Super Kings. He has not missed a single game since he started playing for CSK since the tournament began in 2008 and with 3699 runs at a strike rate of 140 in 132 matches was an integral part of the team. Suresh Raina was appointed the captain of Gujarat Lions in 2016 after Chennai Super Kings was suspended for two years by the Lodha committee in the fallout of the spot-fixing controversy. Raina captained Gujarat Lions for two seasons leading them to the playoffs in 2016 and failing to qualify in 2017.

Faf du Plessis was a four-time IPL winner with the Chennai Super Kings and scored 633 runs during their title-winning run in 2021. Faf du Plessis was signed in 2011 by Chennai Super Kings and he was with them for a decade barring 2016 and 2017 where he played for Rising Pune Super Giants. He was released by CSK and got picked up by RCB in the mega auction for 7 crore. Ahead of IPL 2022, Royal Challengers Bengaluru named Faf du Plessis, one of their big-ticket signings at the mega auction, as captain as he took over as Virat Kohli's successor.  He led the side in 42 matches, securing 21 wins and suffering 21 losses.

started his career with Chennai Super Kings in 2008 and captained them till 2015 before the team was banned for two years. He was one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL. MS Dhoni was named the captain of the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) in the 2016 IPL season. He captained them for the lone season before Steve Smith replaced him as captain for the 2017 IPL season. Rising Pune Super Giants finished seventh in the points table with just five wins in 14 matches. He later rejoined Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 edition as the captain and won them the title.
